UC Davis: University’s DEI Division blocks activist from social media page
Cases
University of California, Davis
Case Overview
The University of California, Davis, maintains several accounts on the social media platform X. In May, activist Beth Bourne replied to a post by UC Davis’s main X account with commentary on gender and sex. The post was reshared by the UC Davis DEI Division’s X account, and other X users responded to the same post with a video showing a confrontation between Bourne and pro-Palestinian protesters in which Bourne expressed her views on transgender women. Subsequently, Bourne discovered the DEI Division’s X account had blocked her, apparently based on disapproval of her views. On June 21, FIRE wrote to UC Davis calling on the school to immediately unblock Bourne from viewing and commenting on the DEI Division’s X account.
On June 28, UC Davis confirmed the DEI Division unblocked Bourne from its X account.
