Middletown Public Schools: School district places numerous “civility” restrictions on students, staff, parents, and visitors

Cases

Case Overview

Connecticut’s Middletown Public Schools has a civility policy that imposes several restrictions on students, staff, and other adults who happen to be on school property or at a school function. The policy makes no distinction between children and adults. Its numerous restrictions include “discriminatory,” “loud,” and “offensive” speech.

On August 12, FIRE wrote to the board of education outlining the constitutional problems with its civility policy and urging the board to revise the policy.
