‘Hartford Courant’ Opines on Columbia Mishaps

An editorial in today’s Hartford Courant discusses the ongoing saga at Columbia University surrounding the student-led protest against Minuteman Project founder Jim Gilchrist. According to the Courant, “this wasn’t an isolated show of intolerance” at Columbia, a university whose commitments to free speech have recently been called into question by FIRE and several members of the media, including the New York Post, The New York Sun, The New York Daily News, and the Chronicle of Higher Education. The Courant editorial uses a favorite FIRE axiom:

Bad ideas are not extinguished by denying their proponents the right of free speech. Sunlight is the best disinfectant. [Emphasis added.]

FIRE is still working for change at Columbia in light of the recent outrages to occur on its campus. As always, stay tuned to The Torch for updates on the state of students’ rights there.
