Yale University: Campus-wide Policies and Practices Restrict Student Journalists’ Rights
Cases
Yale University
Case Overview
On September 20, 2022, the Yale Daily News reported on policies and practices across Yale’s campus that hinder student journalists’ rights. These policies and practices include limiting student journalists’ access to campus facilities, requiring prior review of journalists’ questions and subjects’ responses, and limiting reporters’ direct access to sources. On November 29, FIRE wrote Yale urging the university to reevaluate these policies and practices to ensure they comport with the university’s commitments to free expression. Yale declined to respond to or acknowledge FIRE’s letter.
