In January 2020, after receiving reports of alleged misconduct, the University of Northern Colorado banned all seven fraternities in its Interfraternity Council from conducting a wide array of fraternal activities during the spring semester. The restrictions encompass all activities related to recruitment, social events, alumni events, and other fraternal functions regardless of how small, brief, or unrelated to university affairs or student safety. On February 4, 2020, FIRE sent a letter to the university asking administrators to uphold the freedom of association by rescinding these restrictions and promising to protect the First Amendment rights of its student groups. The university has not responded to FIRE’s letter.
