After students protesting UC San Diego’s alleged failure to honor a graduate student worker’s contract reportedly disrupted a May 5, 2023, alumni awards event, the university announced disciplinary charges against 67 students. Some students who received charges reported they were not in attendance at the event. FIRE wrote the university on July 6 explaining the university must conduct a preliminary review of the incident to determine what students were involved in the disruption before issuing blanket disciplinary charges in order to avoid chilling the expression of students who were not involved in the disruption but still received charges.
