On January 11, 2023, the College Dissident published Tulane University student Sarah Ma’s op-ed arguing that Kanye West, who legally changed his name to Ye in 2021, was right to wear a jacket reading “White Lives Matter” and had reason to say he was going to go “death con 3 On JEWISH PEOPLE.” The next day, Tulane announced that its Office of Student Conduct was reviewing the matter. On January 16, FIRE wrote Tulane urging it to drop its investigation because Ma’s comments, however offensive to some, are protected by the university’s commitment to “an environment in which a variety of ideas can be freely expressed and critically examined.” On January 18, Tulane responded with the excuse that it investigates all reports to the Office of Student Conduct, but it did not follow through with an official investigation.
