Nassau Community College: Board of Trustees Warns Faculty to Stop Voicing Criticism, College President Files Bullying Complaint Against Professor
Cases
Nassau Community College
Case Overview
In December 2021, the Nassau Community College faculty union wrote two letters to the board of trustees criticizing the board and former NCC president Jermaine Williams. In response, the board emailed faculty on December 23 directing them to stop their criticism. On January 11, 2022, FIRE wrote the board, explaining how its December 23 email chills faculty speech and that faculty are free to speak as private citizens on matters of public concern, including about college leadership. On December 21, Williams also filed a baseless bullying complaint against union president Faren Siminoff. FIRE wrote NCC a second time on March 22 asking again for the board to drop its original directive and calling for the bullying charges to be dropped.
