Muhlenberg College: College Fires Tenured Professor for Pro-Palestinian Social Media Advocacy

On September 26, 2024, The Intercept reported that Muhlenberg College had fired tenured professor Maura Finkelstein for her social media advocacy, which included reposting an Instagram story that accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza. FIRE wrote Muhlenberg on October 1, urging the college to reverse its firing of Finkelstein because the college’s promises of free expression protect her right to express her political views outside the classroom. We also warned the college about the chilling effect of violating tenure to punish faculty members for protected political expression.
