Case Overview

On November 6, 2024, Louisiana State University law professor Nicholas Bryner began class by addressing students who may have voted for Donald Trump, urging them to act in a way that helps others in the law school feel comfortable and welcome. On November 25, Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry sent the LSU Board of Supervisors a letter asking the Board to look into this matter, “as LSU professors are prohibited from utilizing state resources to influence public policy.” On November 27, FIRE wrote the Board, explaining that Bryner cannot be punished for his First Amendment protected speech.
