Lindenwood University: TPUSA Chapter Denied Recognition in Apparent Attempt to Prevent Controversy
Cases
Lindenwood University
Case Overview
In October 2022, Lindenwood University’s student government denied a Turning Point USA chapter recognition, reportedly to avoid controversy among students opposed to the group’s views. On November 4, FIRE wrote Lindenwood explaining that because the university promises students expressive rights, it must ensure its student government does not discriminate against student groups based on viewpoint. On November 16, LU responded without addressing FIRE’s concerns about viewpoint discrimination, offering instead the oblique insistence that the student government followed all relevant policies when it denied the group recognition.
