Case Overview

On June 26, 2024, Florida state lawmaker Randy Fine quote-tweeted an X account that posted screenshots of test questions used by Florida International University adjunct professor Mario Reyes in a course on the history of terrorism. After Fine objected to the questions’ alleged anti-Israel bias and implied he had spoken with FIU about disciplining Reyes, FIU publicly confirmed on June 27 it had started a review. While Fine later said it would not discipline Reyes, FIRE wrote FIU on July 26 to explain that the First Amendment protects his selection of pedagogically relevant material and to urge the university to refrain from conducting public reviews or investigations of materials.
