Emerson College: Student Prevented From Posting Flyers Responding to Op-Ed
Cases
Emerson College
Case Overview
closed
In April 2022, Sam Neves, an Emerson student and leader of the campus Turning Point USA chapter, attempted to put up flyers around campus directly responding to an opinion article critical of TPUSA published in the Berkeley Beacon, the college’s student newspaper. An administrator denied permission to display the posters, citing university civility policies. On May 10, FIRE wrote the college arguing that Emerson’s promises of free expression protect Neves’s right to display the flyers. Emerson did not respond to our letter.
