Case Overview
FIRE Victory closed
On March 1, 2022, Berea College’s Building Revolution, Anti-Imperialism, and Dissent (BRAID) student group was set to screen the documentary “Ukraine on Fire.” However, after pressure from administrators who falsely presumed the club supported Russian President Vladimir Putin, the club’s former advisor canceled the screening. On April 8, FIRE wrote Berea to explain that the private college cannot simultaneously promise students expressive rights while controlling which views they may espouse on campus. After FIRE’s letter, administrators did not interfere when the student group scheduled a new screening of the documentary.
