Case Overview

After The Berea Torch published controversial articles, Berea College administrators instructed it to immediately cease posting flyers and printing newspaper-related materials on campus, citing the publication’s decision to not become a recognized student organization. FIRE wrote to Berea on March 9, explaining that regardless of the college’s reasoning for severely restricting The Berea Torch’s ability to advertise and operate on campus, these restrictions cannot be squared with the college’s commitments to free speech. After FIRE’s letter, Berea allowed The Berea Torch to conduct some operations on campus, such as using campus print services.
