University of North Texas: University Launches Review of Faculty Syllabi, Course Materials
Cases
University of North Texas
Case Overview
On November 13, 2024, the Chronicle of Higher Education reported that the University of North Texas initiated a review of faculty teaching materials and ordered changes to the syllabi, course names, and descriptions of over 200 graduate and undergraduate courses. The review appears to stem from a misguided attempt to comply with state law banning administrative DEI activities. FIRE wrote UNT on December 6, urging the university to refrain from forcing faculty members to change their teaching materials, because such modifications infringe on their academic freedom rights to determine the content of their courses.
