Some FIRE programs may have their own privacy policy relating to needs of the program, such as the Learn with FIRE Privacy Policy, and others.  Where such program-specific policies exist, they are clearly labeled and accessible at the program page, in which case(s), the program’s privacy policy, rather than this policy, governs collection, use and/or disclosure of personal information for that program.

We use the information we collect to measure the number of visitors to the different sections of our website, to inform our advocacy and/or charitable activities, and to help us make our website more useful to visitors.

Personally Identifiable Information

If you share your personally identifiable information, this information will be used to provide you with more targeted content. We may use your contact information to send further information about our organization or to contact you when necessary. You may always opt-out of receiving future mailings by contacting us at support@thefire.org.

You may decide to send us personally identifiable information, for example, in an email message containing a question or comment, a text message with your phone numberor by filling out a web form with information you choose to share. In addition to the uses described immediately above, we use personally identifiable information to respond to your requests, we may forward your email to other employees who are better able to answer your questions, and/or we may share your email address with partner organizations with whom FIRE works. You may also decide to provide your mobile number for use in connection with recurring automated advocacy, promotional and/or charitable solicitation personalized text (e.g., SMS and MMS) messages, which are governed by The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression Messaging Terms and Conditions. We may also use your contact information to attempt to reach you in the future.

Other than the automated information collection (e.g., IP address, session cookies, etc.) listed in the first section of this policy, we will not obtain personally identifiable information about you when you visit our website unless you choose to provide such information to us. Providing such information is strictly voluntary.

If you sign up for one of our email lists, we will only send you the information you have requested.

We engage vendors to perform services on our behalf, such as website or data hosting, tracking metrics and/or analytic services, and database and system management. These vendors may be privy to your personally identifiable information while performing these services.

Donor Privacy

FIRE does not rent or sell donor names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, donation details, or any other information provided to us. We do provide certain donor information to trusted third-party companies with whom we have contracted to advance our fundraising efforts. We will occasionally participate in list exchanges with other reputable nonprofits. Those exchanges are facilitated by third-party servicers as a one-time use. FIRE never shares donor information directly with the exchange partner. Donors may opt-out of having their information shared by emailing support@thefire.org to request that their information be kept private.

FIRE is committed to the security of your personal information. All donations through the FIRE website use industry-standard SSL encryption. FIRE’s website and donor databases are password-protected and housed in locked and secure physical facilities.

Kids and Privacy

Special rules apply to children under 13 who visit our website. Other than with respect to specific programs that have their own governing privacy policies as mentioned above, which may involve and govern children’s personal information, we do not request personal information about children under 13. If you are a child under 13, please do not send us any personal information — consult your parent or guardian instead. If we discover that we have received information from a child under 13, we will delete that information.

Removing Information from Our Website

Through its website and other publications, FIRE seeks not just to inform the public of current events but to maintain an accurate historical record of news and developments relevant to its mission and casework. To that end, except as required by law, FIRE will not accede to requests to remove any content from its website, including information regarding specific individuals.
