In FIRE’s Speech Code Rating System, schools receive an overall rating of red, yellow, or green light based on the extent to which their policies, taken together, restrict free speech.
Each individual policy also receives a red, yellow, or green light based on the extent to which that specific policy restricts free speech.
FIRE’s Advanced Search feature allows you to search either for particular types of schools (for example, private universities with a yellow-light rating) or for particular types of policies (for example, red-light harassment policies.)
If you choose to search by school, your results will include all of the schools in Spotlight meeting your search criteria.
If you choose to search by policy, your results will include all of the schools in Spotlight that maintain the specific type of policy you are looking for. You can then review the specific policy or policies in question by reviewing the school’s Spotlight entry, where you will find excerpts from (and full PDF files of) the school’s speech codes.
