Tell Governor Abbott to Protect the First Amendment on College Campuses

Texas Governor Greg Abbott speaks at the state capitol

Lately, free expression isn’t looking very free in Texas.

Over the last couple of days, the nation has watched as Texas police threaten, tackle, and arrest what appear to be peaceful journalists and pro-Palestinian protesters on the University of Texas at Austin’s campus. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott directed and cheered on this disproportionate police response, making his disregard for the First Amendment’s protection of political speech clear by asserting, “These protesters belong in jail.”

Sending overwhelming numbers of police officers to a peaceful protest at a public university — which, by the way, must uphold the First Amendment rights of its students and faculty — blatantly threatens protected speech.

Join FIRE in demanding that Gov. Abbott recommit to upholding First Amendment rights.
