Dear Chancellor Bantz:
Thank you for your April 17 letter in reply to our letter of March 28 in the case of Keith John Sampson. We are pleased to know that his record is clear in the matter of his reading the book Notre Dame vs. the Klan: How the Fighting Irish Defeated the Ku Klux Klan, and we are pleased that you have apologized to Mr. Sampson. It also is good to know that IUPUI is dedicated to ensuring that no one else's rights will be violated by what is now known as IUPUI's Office of Equal Opportunity, which now has a new director.
One crucial matter remains in this case, however. We understand from a Wall Street Journal column and personal communications with the writer that Richard Schneider, IUPUI's Director of Media Relations, has referred to unspecified "harassing behavior" on the part of Mr. Sampson. We ask you to clarify IUPUI's official position: does IUPUI believe that Sampson has engaged in any harassing or not? If so, due process demands you let him know what he is being charged with and by whom, but if not, you should inform Mr. Schneider that baseless accusations of such a serious nature should not be made against students or employees. It appears that almost all parties in this case wish it to be resolved, and we hope that everyone can finally move on. Thank you for your time and candor.
We request a response by Friday, August 8, 2008.
