Student expelled for year for invitation

BALTIMORE, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- A student at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore has been suspended for a year for a racially offensive fraternity party invitation that was posted online.
 
Justin Park, an 18-year-old freshman, is banned from the school's campus until January 2008, the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education said. He must perform 300 hours of community service, and read and write reports on 12 books.
 
About 30 students protested the punishment earlier this week, the Baltimore Sun reported.
 
"This is a violation of the university's moral right for free speech on campus," Lars Trautman, a junior, told the Sun.
 
The invitation, posted on FaceBook, was for a Halloween Party in the Hood, advising party-goers to wear appropriate clothing.
 
Park, who was the Sigma Chi social chairman, was later expelled from the fraternity. The invitation and the party inspired several protests on campus by the Black Students Union and the NAACP.
