Having a good background on speech codes is necessary to understand where they come from and how they operate. John Leo’s “Free inquiry? Not on campus” in January’s issue of City Journal gives a concise, comprehensive history of the rise of speech codes and censorship on college campuses. Similarly, FIRE co-founder Alan Charles Kors’ “Thought Reform 101: The Orwellian implications of today’s college orientation” in Reason gives an excellent overview of the deplorable state of college orientation programs.
